Our Mission:

CEP prepares young people for active citizenship through innovative civics programs and curricula. We work in partnership with public schools, universities, courthouses, historical societies, and youth groups.  Our students gain a rich understanding of American law and government and acquire critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and oral advocacy skills that promote effective civic participation.

Summer Institute at Northeastern

Overview
July 14 - 18, 2008, CEP will be offering an week-long professional development program through the Summer Institute at Northeastern University's Institute for Professional Development and Graduate Studies in Education. The course, We the Students: Teaching the Constitution using Student Rights Cases, is designed for secondary level teachers who want to participate in the Marshall-Brennan Project or incorporate Constitutional law cases into their curriculum.

Course Description
This summer institute is an intensive exploration of We the Students, a secondary level civics curriculum featuring Supreme Court cases about education and the rights of students. The course will focus primarily on two areas of constitutional law, namely: freedom of expression under the First Amendment and equal protection of the laws under the 14th Amendment. Participants will explore effective strategies for teaching this material to middle and high school students and design a teaching unit that is appropriate to their particular classroom settings.
