Our Mission

The Civic Ed Project prepares youth for active citizenship and inspires lifelong participation in our democracy. We achieve this mission by designing and implementing civics programs and curricula and by helping schools foster a climate for youth civic engagement and learning.

Civic Schools

Civic Schools goes International!

During the last four months, the Civic Ed Project has hosted an international fellow from Nepal, Anita Thapa, through the Community Solutions Program (CSP), run by the International Research Exchange (IREX) for the U.S. State Department.

Anita is President of Youth Initiative, a youth led organization located in Kathmandu, Nepal that works on issues of human rights, democratization, governance, peace building and civic leadership.  She completed her Masters Degree in Business Administration and Post Graduate Diploma in Women Studies.  Anita is a proven leader and change maker who has shared her skills and knowledge with thousands of other young people working toward peace after a long period of conflict and civil war in Nepal.

Anita has become an integral part of our organization, assisting us with both strategic planning and day to day operations. She has helped us implement the Civic Schools pilot proces, planning and attending Circles at College Bound Dorchester and English High School.

For her CSP follow up project, Anita has proposed bringing Civic Schools back to Nepal, where she believes it has great potential for strengthening democracy and promoting youth civic engagement. Anita's project proposal was chosen one of eight chosen by her peers to be presented at the CSP End pf Program Conference on December 15.  As a result, Anita and our Executive Director Roy Karp will be co-presenting to State Department officials in Washington, DC.
